31 Days of Party Planning {Day 21: Gifts}

When it comes to my own children, I’m pretty confident in knowing what they like and want for the their birthdays.  But when it comes to my nieces and nephews, I find it a bit of a challenge.  I try my very best to get them something special, something that they’ll love but it’s very difficult to do that.  Especially since I have to coordinate my gift with other family members.  I mean we don’t want to give the child the same gift right?

/When shopping for the “perfect” gift.  I recommend that you and the other family members give each other a heads up  on what you got the child, e.g. “Hey Jane, I’m at X store and saw this cute toy for Joey.”  I was thinking of getting it for him and wanted to give you a heads up”  or you can send a picture text and inform the other person of what your intending to give them.

/Some people also like to give the birthday child’s siblings a gift, so that the siblings don’t feel left out.  If your going to do that, I would check with the child’s parents.  I personally think it’s fine, but what about the birthday child’s feelings.  Of my three girls, one of them doesn’t like receiving gifts on her sister’s birthdays.  She says that their birthday is about them and they (the birthday child) should be fussed over, so when she does receive a gift she prefers not to open it on that day and will wait ’til the following day or two to open the gift. My other daughter doesn’t mind sharing her birthday with her siblings, she thinks it’s a great idea to have her sisters included in gift receiving.

/All in all it’s up to you.  Whatever your comfortable with giving will be appreciated by the child.  Gift giving can be a challenge, but it can also be a ton of fun, especially when you find the ‘perfect’ gift!  Score!!
